A poker ring in Peoria, Illinois continues to thrive despite threats from local authorities. The Peoria Poker League, which was founded in September, has allegedly been functioning illegally for at least two months. In response to recent crackdowns on poker events, the poker league decided to, at least for the time being, cease awarding prizes for poker wins. Despite the elimination of this incentive, the vast majority of the league's 600 members have continued to show up to events.

he Illinois Liquor Control Commission has been sending letters to suspected poker venues, informing them of poker laws and the consequences for breaking them. Coordinators of the Peoria Poker League claimed not to have received one, although they said they had seen a copy of the letter. A spokeswoman for the Illinois Liquor Control Commission issued a statement claiming that the illegality of poker tournaments lies in the issuing of money or prizes to winning parties and not in the essence of the game itself.
