Empire Poker, the self-declared leading North American poker site, has stepped in to try to save plans for bringing major-league baseball to Washington DC. The online poker room offered a whopping $500 million to fund the team's move from Montreal to DC's to-be-built stadium, in exchange for naming rights to the new stadium as well as clearance to set up internet kiosks allowing fans to play poker at the ballpark.
Baseball and city officials are likely to be hesitant in agreeing to accept such a deal and have as of yet to comment on Empire Poker's offer. The option of closing a business deal with a member of the gambling industry might rub officials the wrong way. Additionally, baseball has a history of sensitivity towards anything related to gambling and is unlikely to promote internet poker on the ballpark's premises.
