After months of debate and a host of amendments, legislation was passed in South Australia reducing the number of poker machines. More than 3,000 poker machines will now be eliminated.
South Australia will become the first State to reduce the number of poker machines. The State's Independent Gaming Authority recommended reducing the number of poker machines, from 15,000 to 12,000, and so to reduce the availability of those machines to addicted gamblers.
The question remains: will reducing the number of poker machines reduce the number of addicted gamblers? The answer to this is quite controversial. Some think that less machines indeed equals fewer gamblers. A person with a gambling addiction, however, is likely to go to great lengths to feed his or her addition. If that person does not find poker machines in a certain area, he or she will probably go elsewhere to find them.
One way to solve this problem is to offer treatment to people who are addicted to gambling. It is not enough to eliminate a certain number of poker machines because they can easily find something else with which to gamble. One suggestion was to increase funding to the Gamblers Rehabilitation Fund by $2-million.
Politics play an influential role on both sides of the debate. Hotel affiliates, who incidentally pull more weight with the authorities than those of smaller clubs, are trying to encourage legislation that will let them keep their poker machines. Others, however, see hotels as the major problem, as they are among the most heavily trafficked pokie venues. They are therefore trying to exclude small clubs from anti-pokie legislation.
