Juan Carlos Mortensen, known by the poker community as El Matador, has been creeping his way into the upper ranks of professional poker over the past few years. Mortensen began to make his mark in the poker community starting in 2000, when he to enter several major tournaments, and often walked away with relative successes. In the years to follow, El Matador became the second player to have ever won the main event at both the World Series of Poker (WSOP) as well as at the World Poker Tour (WPT).
The poker pro was born to a Spanish mother and Danish father in Ecquador. As a child, his family moved to Madrid, Spain. At age 25, after playing Texas Hold'em recreationally for a short period of time, Mortensen decided to quit his job as a bartender to pursue poker full time. He played in local games in Madrid, but after a long string of wins, Mortensen began to find it hard to recruit opponents. It was then that he decided to take operations to America. He started out in Atlantic City, but his poker career was off to a rough start. Ultimately, however, he accumulated a bankroll of $10,000, but unfortunate for him, soon after that he was forced to return to Spain for visa purposes.
After building a reputation in Madrid as an expert poker player, Madrid poker pros offered to pay for Mortensen to enter the World Series of Poker in 1999; he outlasted half the field. Since then, El Matador has had countless successes and continues to make tracks in the world of poker. At not yet 33 years old, Mortensen is sure to have a long a prosperous career yet ahead of him.
