GSN, the only U.S. television network devoted to gaming content and interactive game playing, has set out to determine whether poker really is a man's game, or whether this notion is just an old wives' tale in need of revision. For seven episodes, the network for games' Poker Royale: Battle of the Sexes is pitting 12 of the world's top poker pros together for a charged-up round of poker. The tournament is hosted by Radio personality Tom Leykis and TV veteran Kennedy. Leykis is renowned for his "defense" of the male gender, while Kennedy brings an outspoken female voice to the table. The tournament's play-by play will provided by poker pro Robert Williamson III.
The controversial Leykis made a name for himself through his syndicated radio program, The "Tom Leykis Show," which by default became something of a forum on gender issues. Kennedy got her start as a local radio DJ in Los Angeles and then went on to become an MTV VJ. Since then, she has hosted GSN's Friend or Foe as well as the network's Who Wants to be Governor of California?
The tournament's male contenders include Chris Moneymaker (1st place, 2003 World Series of Poker), Paul Wolfe (final runner up, 2003 World Championship Online Poker), Greg "Fossilman" Raymer (1st place, 2004 World Series of Poker), Amir Vahedi (Player of the Year, 2001 No Limit Texas Hold'em), Layne Flack (5-time Champion, World Series of Poker) and Antonio Esfandiari (first place champion, World Poker Tour). On the women's side, Kathy Liebert (champion, 2002 Party Poker Million), Jennifer Harman (4th place, World Poker Tour Bellagio), Evelyn Ng (2nd place, World Poker Tour Ladies Night), Karina Jett, Kristy Gazes (5th place, 2001 World Series of Poker Shoe) and Clonie Gowen (champion, World Poker Tour Ladies Night) are fighting for the championship.
