PokerRoom.com, one of the most popular poker sites on the internet, is hosting two tournaments to benefit relief efforts aiding victims of the Tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia. PokerRoom promised to match the prize pools for those two tournaments, donating that sum to the International Red Cross. Tournament winners, themselves, will also be given the option to donate a portion (or even all) of their winnings through PokerRoom.com. The first Tournament, which took place on January 8th, featured $20 buy-ins and the upcoming January 9th tournament features $100 buy-ins.
PokerRoom.com's native Sweden was the European country most affected by the tragedy, with at least 52 Swedes confirmed dead and another 827 still missing. The poker site even had employees vacationing in the region during the Tsunamis. Although Sweden itself was personally delivered quite a blow by the catastrophe, PokerRoom.com's has vowed to approach the Tsunami as an international disaster.
Launched in 1999, PokerRoom.com was one of the first online internet poker sites to appear on the web. Although the site started with a "play money" format, its move to real money games helped it grow to one of the largest poker sites on the internet. Gaming software featured by the site is in no-download format and is accessible for users of both Mac and Linux.
