ESPN is capitalizing on the successes of the World Series of Poker with its recent launch of 'Tilt,' a new racy poker drama that is already making waves. The story, set in Las Vegas in the days preceding a big tournament, creates a fictional "behind the scenes" from the perspective of the various players.
So what's all the fuss about? The show is getting attention for its seedy portrayal of the Vegas poker scene, all cutthroat players and scheming casino bosses. Within the first ten minutes of episode one, a fight breaks out and one of the main characters, gruff poker celeb Don "the Matador" Everest receives sexual favors in a bathroom. Reaction to the show is mixed. Some see the show as offering an exciting, if sensationalist look at the world of Vegas poker, others think ESPN is better off shying away from original programming.
One thing's certain, however: the creators of Tilt are advised to keep the show's content matter within reason, lest it suffer the fate of its predecessor, the cancelled 'Playmakers.' The NFL-inspired drama featured players womanizing, consuming illicit substances and just generally living in excess. ESPN cancelled the show after meeting considerable pressure from NFL officials. This said, such a fate is unlikely, since Vegas lacks either a commissioner or players' association.
