In numerous states throughout the U.S., regulators are swimming against the tide, trying to tighten gambling restriction among a haze of poker mania, which continues to sweep across the nation. As poker, particular the Texas Hold'em version of the game, continues to gather popularity, local games and tournaments multiply at virtually exponential levels. Although authorities often succeed in shutting down games and taking legal actions against game coordinators, these measures often collapse, due to legislative ambiguities existing in many states.
Do state regulators move on, live and let live? Indeed not; authorities in several states, such as Minnesota, are trying to rewrite laws to better suit their agendas. For many, this means tightening the restrictions against card games, but for others, including Minnesota State Senator Dave Kleis, this means proposing provisions, which would relax restrictions against poker and other card games.
Minnesota's laws, for one, allow play for cash for games deemed "social skill games," a category currently including cribbage and rummy. Poker is currently not considered by the law to be a game of social skill; however, State Senator Dave Kleis has proposed new legislation to define Texas Hold'em as such. Should the senator's bill pass, and Minnesotans will technically be permitted to win up to $200 in Texas Hold'em.
