There are various theories in trying to identify the prime cause of poker's ever-budding popularity in basements, bars and college campuses across the U.S- not to mention in Hollywood. One theory pins the phenomenon on the "card cam's" introduction at top poker tables. Card cams let the audience catch a glimpse of player's hands and keep track of each move, thus transforming the classic card game into something of a spectator sport. Card cams were first instated at the televised World Poker Tour (WPT) three years ago, and since that time, poker has taken off.
Poker has not only been popularized, however, but the game has been intensively glamorized in past years. Tournaments are held in the glitziest of casinos and receive first rate television production. The result is a game quite unlike the smoky back room version of years past.
Poker's new image has allowed it to be adopted by Hollywood circles, becoming past time to the stars. Top celebs such as Ben Affleck, Tobey Maguire, Mimi Rogers, James Woods Leonardo Di Caprio and David Schwimmer are just a fraction of the stars spending their evenings at the poker table. Of course the usual Hollywood game is unlike your average neighborhood poker night, complete with wine and gourmet cuisine.
Hollywood has even produced poker professionals. Gabe Kaplan, star of "Welcome Back Kotter" whose acting career has faded since the show went off the air, has become something of a pro poker player over the past 20 years, further proof that the line between the poker world and Hollywood have become blurred.
