Online poker software developer Poker Academy recently announced plans to donate $13,000 worth of Texas Hold'em software to Lehigh University to be used for research on artificial intelligence. Students of computer science and engineering participating in the course "Artificial Intelligence: Game Programming" next fall will benefit from the software.
The course aims to use the poker software as a tool to teach students to create computer games that offer greater adaptability to players' individual playing patterns, and skill level. Apparently only a few games make use of "machine learning," otherwise known as adaptive artificial intelligence, Poker Academy software being among them. A program that employs machine learning can custom design each game according to the player's skill level, with beginner players playing a beginner's game and for an expert player, an expert game
Students in the class will algorithms, which are processes by which programs are encoded to help computers solve problems. By using algorithms, students will learn how software robots, known as "bots," are designed to replace human beings in games such as poker.
