North Carolina is currently mulling over a bill, which could pave the way for legal video poker. The debated lottery bill, which passed in the State House of Representatives on April 6th, is currently under review by a State Senate committee. Senators are considering the lottery initiative amongst fears that by introducing a lottery, the state will ultimately open the door to video poker and other gambling machines. The House approved the bill in a close vote of 61-59.
In addition to establishing a lottery and a corresponding lottery commission, the bill would give the commission jurisdiction to endorse electronic games. The bill intentionally uses general language when referring to what sort of electronic games it includes, so as to open the playing field for lottery operators to install a wide variety of games, possibly even video poker.
Lottery and video poker may stay out of North Carolina, should all 21 of the Senate's republican's stick to party lines and oppose the bill. This is likely, since at least five of the Senate's democrats have already voiced their opposition to the bill, leaning the decision towards a veto
