Indulging the world's relatively newfound love of poker, two new poker films are currently in the works, both featuring some of Hollywood's biggest poker fans. Each film takes a different approach to the poker phenomenon, so viewers need not fear a potential case of poker overload at the movies.
The first poker film is being spearheaded by director Zak Penn and currently boasts a lineup of celebrity poker players, including Ben Affleck, David Schwimmer and William H. Macy. The as-of-yet untitled film will reportedly take on a mockumentary feel, with mostly improvised dialogue. Cast members are to receive fully-formed characters, but will then interact on an essentially impromptu basis.
The second film is the brainchild of poker celeb Lou Diamond Phillips of Labamba fame. His poker film, which has been titled "Dead Money," will be a heartwarming tale of success in the face of unlikely odds. Dead Money, the title of which refers to an inevitable loser, is the story of a rookie poker player who gets lucky in the tournament circuit. Phillips has been quoted as saying that Camryn Manheim, Norm Macdonald and Meat Loaf have already agreed to join the project.
