Cleveland's Nautica Entertainment Complex, a festival center built to house a series of charity poker tournaments throughout the summer, will open its doors, following yesterday's ribbon cutting ceremony. Kicking off on June 16th, and running up though Labor Day, the Nautica Charity Poker Festivals will host a total of twelve four-day charity poker festivals, each hosted by a different charity organization.
The 20,800 square foot venue, which is owned by Jacobs Investments, can host up to 300 poker players at one time. Poker players, who have to be at least 21 years of age to participate, will have to pay an hourly fee for playing, but will get to keep their winnings.
One of the main motivations behind the Nautica Charity Poker Festivals is the generation of revenue for local charities. Participating charities will gain proceeds stemming from player fees, patron donations, sponsorships, as well as profits from refreshment concessions. Charities already registered to host poker festivals include the Easter Seals of Northeast Ohio, Cleveland Baseball Federation, Greater Cleveland Special Olympics, Up Side of Downs and the Northeast Ohio Breast Cancer Coalition.
In addition to aiding charities, the poker festivals also aim to increase awareness regarding the demand for poker, as well as to boost the legitimacy of the game as a whole. According to Dave Grunenwald, Vice President of Development/ Leasing for Jacobs Investments, "The Poker Festivals will demonstrate the phenomenal demand for gaming in Ohio and show people that gaming is a viable source of revenue."
