More than meeting expectations, the World Series of Poker has continued to break records in turnout and prize money. In total, more than 29,000 poker players came to Las Vegas to compete in the WSOP, whose combined buy-ins helped create the $103 million total prize pool for the event. Participation and prize pool for the main event actually doubled those of last year's tournament. This year's main event will see 5,619 poker players vie for their share of $25,760,000. This means that every player who makes the final table will go home with at least a million dollars. The main event champion will leave with seven and a half.
Despite excitement regarding the proportions of this year's WSOP, the main event proved disappointing for some of the biggest names in pro poker. Early on in day one of the main event, David "Devil Fish" Ulliott, Johnny Chan, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson and Phil Laak fell from the competition. And during the second portion of day one, poker greats Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Hellmuth and Men "The Master" Nguyen were all booted out.
