Stu "The Kid" Ungar, whose prowess at the poker table, reckless lifestyle and consequently short life all helped turn him into a legend. They also helped make him valuable material for a major motion picture. Warner Brothers recently bought the rights to Ungar's recently released biography, "One of a Kind: The Rise and Fall of Stuey 'The Kid' Ungar," and has already enlisted Graham King to produce the biopic. King is best known for Producing "The Aviator," the tale of another tortured genius, Howard Hughes. According to King, the film is destined for success, thanks to the booming popularity of online poker.
Ungar's story follows a rags to riches, and back to rags timeline. He won the World Series of Poker three times in his 42 short years and accumulated around $30 million playing poker. Well, perhaps accumulated is the wrong word. Ungar subscribed to a range of expensive vices, cocaine being the most costly in the long run, and never saw his poker winnings for very long. His years of cocaine abuse helped contribute to his tragic and untimely death in 1998, one year after he won his third WSOP.
