In recent weeks, authorities in the state of New York is cracking down on pub poker games. A number of establishments have been the subject of warnings, fines, liquor licenses revocation and other actions, for holding poker games that the State Liquor Authority deems as illegal. According to New York State law, poker is regarded as an illegal game of chance. While private home games are reportedly not prosecuted, as long as the organizer is not shaving off a cut of the winnings, anti-gambling laws are enforced for establishments holding a liquor license.
In most of the pub poker games, players lay out between $20 and $30, and organizers generally do not benefit directly from the games. They make their money on food and drinks, citing poker as a way to boost patronage since the smoking ban was instituted.
