Police in New Hanover County, North Carolina recently entered seven businesses, holding search warrants, and looking for proof of illegal video poker activity. Police were searching for illegal poker machines, cash, firearms and narcotics, and came away with 26 machines, as well as $80,000. The businesses have reportedly been shut down following the raid.
Poker machines are not illegal in themselves, rather it's the nature of the video poker game that renders it potentially illegal. A single business is permitted to manage up to three video poker machines, according to North Carolina law, and an establishment housing more than five machines can be brought up on felony charges.
In addition to the number of video poker machines permitted by law, the prizes offered are also greatly restricted. Cash payout is prohibited, and winnings are capped at merchandise equaling $10 in value.
Video poker continues to spread in North Carolina, and it's not commemorative pens and snow-globes that players are after. Laws pertaining to video poker operation are reportedly quite expensive and difficult to enforce, a situation that allows some video poker operators to earn hundreds of thousands of dollars annually from the machines.
