After sweeping across the U.S., and more recently, gaining speed in Europe and Asia, the poker phenomenon's latest stop seems to be none other than Israel. Israelis, like Noam Lanir of Empire Online and Cassava Enterprises' Shaked brothers, are among the front-runners of the online poker and casino industry, and now it seems that consumers, not only investors, are going "all-in." With Israeli sport networks also jumping on the poker programming bandwagon, a move that initially helped spark the poker craze in the U.S., the game's appeal has spread in the pint-sized Middle East country as well.
Next week, September 19th and 20th, approximately 60,000-70,000 Israelis are reportedly planning to turn out for the second annual Pokerface 2005, a land-based poker tournament sponsored by online poker site Everst-Poker.com. Players will lay down 1170 ILS (approximately $259) to participate, and the winner of the tournament will move on to the Master Classics of Poker tournament, to take place November 4 to 12 in Amsterdam. Master Classics of Poker is touted as the Europe's biggest poker tournament.
