Degree deodorant brand certainly seems to be going all-in for poker. Last month, the company sponsored the "Degree All-In Poker Experience" poker boot camp series at ESPN Zones across the United States, and this month, Canadian sports and recreation network TSN is in the midst of airing the "Degree Poker Championship." The first annual Degree Poker Championship is a Texas Hold'em tournament sponsored, as is evident by the name, by the Degree brand, which has gone in search of the next undiscovered poker phenom among 'average Joes' across Canada
The actual championship kicked off in June, but came to television this past Thursday, when playoff numbers one and two aired on TSN. The following night featured the broadcast of playoff number three, and this coming Friday and Saturday will see the broadcast of remaining playoffs, as well as the championship event.
The Degree Poker Championship aimed to attract poker players from across Canada, tempting them with $100,000 for the top winner, as well as a seat at the 2005 WSOP and another chance at a million bucks.
Players signed up to compete in the Degree Poker Championship through Degree's online poker-related website, DegreePoker.com. The site reportedly received 20,000 responses from players requesting to be entered in the poker championship. Of these 20,000, 2,000 were randomly selected to play in either of the two regional tournaments. Winners of the regional tournaments then went on the compete in the playoffs, the segment of the event which is currently being televised. Regional tournaments were held at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, B.C., and at the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort in
Niagara Falls, Ont., which incidentally, is the largest gaming facility in Canada. Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort was also the hosting venue for the playoffs and championship event.
