A woman recently committed suicide in a Melbourne casino hotel room, after stealing $200,000 from her parents to fund her poker machine addiction. Unfortunately, the case of Susan is not an isolated incident. Pokies, the familiar Australian term for poker machines, are being implicated in a shocking number of suicide incidents in the state of Victoria. The tragic case of Susan is just one of the 70 gambling-related suicides recorded by the Victorian Coroner's Court between June 2001 and June 2005.
In addition to robbing her parents of their life savings, Susan also weaseled $30,000 out of a close friend and pawned her brother's golf clubs, all to feed her addiction to poker machines. According to the coroner's investigation, Susan had been diagnosed with depression a year before her death, a fact that likely helped complicate her relationship with poker machine gaming, and jeopardize her general stability.
68 of the 70 suicide cases reported by the Victorian Coroner's Court were committed by the gambling addicts themselves, while two of them were by the partners of compulsive gamblers. The 70 incidents of gambling related suicide related to all types of gambling games; however, a disproportionately high number of these suicides were associated specifically with poker machine gambling.
