In an unprecedented move, GSN, the network for games, will begin airing a new poker show featuring cash games. While cable networks are currently plastered with tournament-style shows, GSN hopes that its new series, called "High Stakes Poker," will attract more viewers.
"High Stakes Poker" will pit professional poker players against wealthy amateurs, each risking large amounts of his or her own money, in cash games with a $100,000 buy-in. The show will also allow players to cash out or add more money from their wallets at any time, new elements to the televised poker world. Thus, a player could theoretically lose hundreds of thousands of dollars of their own money.
In light of a general trend showing slumping television audiences for poker shows, GSN hopes that "High Stakes Poker" will represent the next generation in televised poker. Executives at GSN are aiming to provide viewers with an otherwise rare opportunity to observe traditionally private high-stakes cash games.
In the 13 episodes of "High Stakes Poker" GSN has ordered for its debut season, the network has invited seasoned pros such as Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, and Doyle Brunson to face off against wealthy amateurs like NBA Lakers owner Jerry Buss and Landry's restaurant chain owner Tilman Fertitta.
