Despite an ongoing legal dispute with the U.S.-based Travel Channel about domestic broadcasting rights, WPT Enterprises has announced that it is looking for sponsors to distribute its new poker series, the Professional Poker Tour (PPT), internationally. According to Steven Lipscomb, President and CEO of WPTE, this new venture falls in line with the company's goal of driving "people in overseas markets to our international online gaming business."
The ownership of domestic broadcasting rights to the PPT has become somewhat controversial of late. WPTE entered into licensing negotiations with ESPN two months ago. The Travel Channel, however, felt that it already held these contractual rights based on agreements it signed regarding the WPTE's World Poker Tour series. The issue is currently being resolved through negotiations between both parties' legal representatives.
As opposed to WPTE's highly popular World Poker Tour series, only poker professionals will be allowed to compete in the PPT. Additionally, just like in professional golf, these professionals will have to qualify to earn their spots on the PPT.
