According to a report by WABC Eyewitness News, teenage gambling is on the rise and so is the risk of their potentially becoming addicts. The report cites a study that found overspending and pathological hiding of gambling activity among the problematic symptoms of more than 50% of the approximately 3 million kids nationwide who play cards for money on a weekly basis.
Youths who gamble acknowledge the financial risk they take when it's possible to lose $100 or more in a single evening. Yet, many of them shrug off the dangers of getting hooked by noting that if they run out of money to play with, they can't continue to feed their habit.
While some parents are concerned about this worrying trend and how it might negatively affect their own children, others are overjoyed to see their children engaging in a fun social activity. In general, most parents prefer their children playing poker "safe and sound" all together under one roof rather than having them out on city streets consorting with the wrong type of crowds. These parents further justify their support for their children's poker playing by citing how society as a whole is encouraging it, especially through the media.
Indeed, easily-influenced teenagers can turn on the television and tune in to endless and ubiquitous poker broadcasting, sometimes with celebrities adding extra glamour and excitement to the game. It is thus understandably difficult to expect these kids to resist wanting to play the game themselves. It is up to their own judgment, however, to ensure that they don't take their newfound passions too far.
