Poker philanthropy is set to reach new horizons as Wichita's Amateur Poker League will launch a national charity poker tournament tour to benefit soldiers wounded in Iraq. The amateur league, which recently hosted a local charity poker event in Kansas that drew over 18,000 people, decided to capitalize on their fundraising success and bring the charity poker fever to at least 12 metropolitan areas across the country beginning in early December.
The Wichita Amateur Poker League has chosen to raise funds for the Coalition to Support America's Heroes from among a host of other deserving charities. Types of assistance provided by the Coalition to Support America's Heroes include facilitating family visits during soldiers' surgical rehabilitation and paying for the modification of soldiers' private homes to accommodate severe injuries sustained in battle. As the Coalition is dedicated to addressing the needs of wounded soldiers, ordinary poker-playing citizens will have the unique opportunity to assist their countrymen who served overseas while taking part in their favorite recreational activity.
Stops along the poker tour will include St. Louis, Miami, and Dallas, along with many other smaller cities. Hundreds of thousands of amateur poker players from all over the United States will thus be able to give back to their nation's troops. The organizers of the national charity poker tour also hope to personally take the game to the soldiers. With genuine patriotic spirit, the league is planning to host an Independence Day event on July 4th, 2006 in Baghdad.
