Attempting to mirror the success of their online counterparts, video game developers are releasing poker video games at an astonishing rate. With more poker video games constantly appearing on the market, however, newer games are in need of concepts that set them apart from the rest. The newest poker video game to go into development, Poker Face, attempts to do just that. Developed by industry newcomer Play Technologies, Poker Face places emphasis on the players, "their own unique body language and "tells," instead of simply the cards, which it claims is the case with most other poker video games.
In addition to placing emphasis on the "human" aspect of poker, Poker Face also includes a running narrative that immerses players in the "dark side" of poker. Poker face brings card sharks, crime bosses and femme fatales into the mix, with a bad beat potentially translating into a pair of busted fingers.
By adding these elements, Play Technologies claims to create a more realistic poker experience than that offered by other video games. Jon Sykes, Managing Director of Play Technologies, thinks cards make up only half the story when it comes to poker. "The rest," he says, "is about the other players, your ability to guess what they're up to, the risks of bluffing and the consequences of losing. What we're doing with Poker Face is recreating all of these other aspects of the game and creating what we believe is an exciting and compelling new way to enjoy poker as a videogame."
Poker Face is slated for release on PCs and Sony PSP in Fall 2006.
