Over 3,000 Saipan voters, one of the Northern Marianas Islands, have shown support for a petition that demands tighter regulations in the poker industry. The petition is looking to restrict poker establishments within villages, charge higher poker fees and create a bigger distance between schools and poker rooms.
Northern Marianas College students have been collecting signatures and are aiming to gather 5,000 by the end of December in order tighten control over the poker industry. Many believe that, although poker establishments raise millions of dollars each year, they still have a negative impact on society. One hundred and eighty nine poker rooms are already located in residential areas and it is believed that many crimes committed are connected to the poker world.
Petitioners are not aiming to shutdown the Saipan poker industry altogether. However they would like the areas in which they are located, such as near schools and churches, to be more restricted. The petition, which was introduced by Rep. Clyde Norita, will limit poker rooms to areas in Garapan, on Middle Road north to Hotel Nikko Saipan, and on Beach Road south to Pacific Islands Club up to Agingan Lane.
