If you wanted to be a spectator at this poker tournament you had to bring your scuba gear and be prepared to take a dive. Outlasting seasoned professional poker players such as Kenna James and Phil "the Unabomber" Laak, Juha Helppi swam to victory in the waters off the coast of St. Kitts to become the first Inter Poker Extreme Poker Champion. Another unique feature of the event was the winner's Caribbean Poker Classic Extreme Poker Bracelet, comprised of genuine Caribbean beads and seashells.
Aside from the normal intense concentration needed to play in poker tournaments, players had to contend with potentially distracting fish and stingrays and tame their emotions so as not to waste their limited air supply. The final hand created waves of excitement when Helppi, squaring off against Inter Poker spokesperson Peter Marcus, pulled a miracle boat with 2-9 offsuit to wash away Marcus' pair of kings.
The underwater event took three months to plan and organize and involved waterproof cards, weighted chips, and table anchors. To make sure no participants floated away on the "river," each poker player spent a day with diving professionals in preparation. Needless to say, the extreme nature and conditions of the event led more credibility to the argument for poker as a sport. Inter Poker plans to have more extreme poker events in other far-flung locations, such as mountaintops and arctic wastelands.
