The first ever Grand Slam of Poker will be held in the Star City Casino in Birmingham, England, about a month from now. The unique competition, sponsored by paddypowerpoker.com, will have teams of six entrants each, representing seven European nations. The 42 players from France, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales will play no-limit Texas hold 'em for two days.
Players will compete to be the individual winner of the event, while simultaneously earning points for their country's team. Poker play at the final table will conclude with the three top finishers earning €50,000 (1st), €30,000 (2nd), and €20,000 (3rd). Additionally, according to their order of elimination, each player will earn points for his or her country's team. The country that accumulates the most points by the end of the tournament will be declared the winner of the team competition and will take home €110,000, to be divided evenly among the six team members.
Poker players who qualify for spots on each national team, exclusively through paddypowerpoker.com, will be captained by professional poker legends, such as Donnacha O’Dea (Ireland), Gary Jones (England), Dave Colclough (Wales), Ivan Donaghy (Northern Ireland), and Chris Bjorin (Sweden). France's captain is unnamed as of press time. Beginning in March of next year, SKY SPORTS will be broadcasting the international affair in six one-hour-long segments.
Adding to the notion of poker being a full-fledged sport, the tournament will be filmed in front of a live audience and will feature a "halftime" during which teammates can discuss strategy and poker tactics to employ. As the event is "made for television," cameras will be rolling throughout, and microphones will be recording the huddles of each country's representatives during "halftime." Also to be made available to the event's television viewers are constantly updated statistics on the point total of each team.
