The Speaker of North Carolina's House of Representatives has been criticized for accepting overly generous amounts of campaign funding from special interest groups tied to the video poker industry. Democracy North Carolina, a group that aims to ensure fairness and legitimacy in state politics, has pointed out glaring ties between State Speaker Jim Black and proponents of video poker in the state.
In response to these accusations, authorities from the Speaker's office touted the legality of video poker machines in North Carolina. In addition, Black's spokespeople pointed out that he was not the only beneficiary of donations from video poker's advocates. Indeed, former State Representative Michael Decker, one of Black's political allies, was also reported as having reaped the benefits of donations from owners of video poker gaming machines.
Furthermore, according to Democracy North Carolina's report, video poker-linked donations to Black's political funding have halved in the current two-year elections cycle, as compared to the previous two-years he was in office. Thus, it seems as though the allegations by the watchdog group were mostly meant to warn the Speaker not to gamble with his political standing.
