New details are emerging about what promises to be one of the most exciting poker shows to date, GSN's "High Stakes Poker." As previously reported here on OPN ( http://www.onlinepoker-news.com/20051030/golden_nugget_to_host_gsn_s_high_stakes_poker_and_fsn_s_poker_superstars_djc.aspx), the 13-episode series will broadcast a cash game between wealthy businessmen and poker professionals with a minimum buy-in of $100,000. Now it appears as though the series has a unique trump card up its sleeve: Gabe Kaplan, formerly of TV's "Welcome Back Kotter," and now a respected top-notch poker player, will be giving color commentary on the action at the tables.
Since leaving "Kotter," Kaplan has had some supporting roles in motion pictures and has found success in stand-up comedy. Kaplan has more recently become widely known for his poker prowess, also having provided analysis for ESPN's "World Series of Poker" and NBC's "National Heads-UP Poker Challenge." AJ Benza, another newcomer to the Game Show Network, will host the series, with Kaplan's accompaniment.
The names of some more participants in the cash game have also been released. They include poker pros like WSOP bracelet winners Ted Forrest and Sam Farha, business tycoon Fred Chamanara, a Chicago restaurant owner, and Dr. Amir Nasiri, a successful Las Vegas physician.
In addition to the high stakes poker drama, the show will also feature small looks into the private and daily lives of professional poker players. For instance, cameras will follow Doyle Brunson to a Laker game he attended with team owner Dr. Jerry Buss. Buss will also be part of the cash game, as will Doyle's son Todd, who is making a name for himself with great cash game successes.
