Today marked the launch of the new Internet domain, .eu. The European Union appointed a committee called EURid to be in charge of domain name registration. Not surprisingly, one of the most popular requests for domain name ownership was poker.eu. The worldwide poker euphoria has not passed over Europe by any means. Poker.eu's placing as the seventh most requested domain name attributes to the game's extreme popularity on the continent.
The .eu domain immediately secured its place as a top-level domain, along with .us, .com, and .org, as over 20,000 individual domain name requests shot in to the EURid registry offices for EU-wide rights to Internet sites.
Finding its place among such hot domain sites as hotel.eu, casino.eu, business.eu, and of course sex.eu (the most requested name), the lucky group or individual that ends up owning the initial rights to poker.eu will surely make the most of poker's popularity to attract web traffic to its site. Alternatively, the owner could just "follow the money" and end up selling its rights to poker.eu for a huge profit on the turnover.
