One of the results of the poker craze sweeping across the United States is the emergence of countless home poker games. Not all Americans live close enough to casinos to make the drive to a sanctioned poker room worth their while. Also, not all poker players, especially those new to the game, feel comfortable enough to try their hand in casinos against more experienced players. Many Americans have therefore created their own poker action in the privacy of their homes, usually with buddies and longtime acquaintances.
Many home players have become attracted to poker after witnessing the glamorous nature of televised events, such as the World Series of Poker. When people see poker players winning millions of dollars in front of all those lights and cameras, the game can be quite alluring. Televised poker, however, doesn't film the complete picture, as for every winner, there are tens, if not hundreds, of losers.
Home poker games can be exceptionally fun, especially when there is a social, friendly atmosphere. Recently, however, poker's rising popularity in domestic circles has been paralleled by rising stakes. Such a trend, in which recreational players can lose hundreds or thousands of dollars in a few short hours, is alarming and deserving of attention.
Especially for people of lesser means, a poker addiction can become dangerous. Sure, they'd still be surrounded by friends, but when pot sizes grow to hundreds of dollars apiece, the tremendous risk involved puts these individuals in precarious predicaments.
Since the poker boom began a few years ago, the National Council of Problem Gambling has reported a particular increase in poker-related gambling problems. To combat this worrying trend, authorities in the state of Minnesota, for example, have legalized Texas Hold 'em in commercial establishments, with strict limits. As the total prize pool cannot exceed $200 according to law, officials hope that they will have provided outlets for eager poker players while simultaneously protecting them from losing too much money in the process.
Ideally, home poker games should limit themselves to being a leisurely activity; a reason for friends to get together and hang out. Losing a few bucks in a home poker game isn't such a big deal, as you'd pay similar prices for going out and having a fun time in town. When hosting a home poker game, you might want to think twice before upping the ante.
