Texans love motorcycles and Texans love poker. It's no accident, then, that residents of the Lone Star State are huge fans of "poker runs." At poker runs, motorcycle riders pay an entry/registration fee and receive a random card at each of several predetermined rally points. At the end of the run, participants with the best, second-best, and worst poker hands receive cash prizes.
These poker runs have become popular as fundraisers for charitable causes, as charities can rake in hundreds or even thousands of dollars in a relatively short amount of time. Indeed, organizations, from police and fire departments to nonprofit cancer research centers, have found poker runs to be a great way to raise money for their operations. As of next year, however, charities will be banned by state law from raising money through poker runs.
A recent ruling issued by state Attorney General Greg Abbott stated that taking profits from poker runs amounted to a violation of Texas law, even if the profits were channeled to charitable causes. State law prohibits gambling in instances when an event operator would take a cut of the proceeds, rather than have the full amount of monies collected be disbursed to participants/contestants upon completion of the event.
It's unfortunate that charitable causes wind up on the wrong side of the law.
