ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports, is conducting a poll to determine which athletes are worthy of being deemed part of their All-SportsNation roster this year. According to the ESPN website, the ideal 2005 All-SportsNation team member is an athlete who "has what it takes to beat the very best from every sport." Poker's lone representative on the list of 30 nominees is 2005 World Series of Poker Champion Joe Hachem.
Anyone is free to vote for five of their favorite athletes, to comprise their full All-SportNation team. With only five spots on the team, however, the poker ace faces some stiff competition from athletes who have excelled at more traditional sports this year. Around 20,000 votes have been cast as of press time, and Hachem is currently bringing up the rear in the voting, with only about two percent in favor of his membership on the ESPN team.
With big sports names like Lance Armstrong, Peyton Manning, LeBron James, and Roger Clemens, also nominated, it's easy to understand how the Aussie poker pro might still be considered a small fish in a room full of whales. Though poker has earned a solid place among the top sports watched on television, ESPN in particular, it appears as though sports fans still prefer athletes who do more than grind it out on the felt.
