Incensed by the opinion of Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, which termed poker runs illegal, Texas motorcyclists aren't ready to fold 'em just yet. As reported, here on Online Poker News, the popular poker runs were ruled illegal as organizers, charities included, took a cut of the proceeds raised.
In poker runs, motorcycle riders receive random cards at various rally points to make the best poker hand possible. Typically, these riders pay an entry fee to participate in the poker runs. If the event is organized for charity, a nonprofit organization will rake some of the funds raised during the event while paying out the remainder to the victors.
Abbott's opinion stated that Texas law forbids any organization, including charities, from collecting any proceeds of an "event based on elements of luck." With charity, rather than gambling being the main focus of most poker runs, many motorcyclists, unofficially represented by the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association, are understandably peeved. As they do not specifically aim to gamble or to break laws, but rather to have a good time riding their Harleys and "raising a little hell" (and money for charity), the bikers are vowing to fight for their right to stage poker runs, or somehow get around the law.
Only time will tell if the bikers are bluffing, if the state Attorney General will further raise the stakes, or if charities will get to keep "chopping the pot."
