For the first time in its 36-year history, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) will have an event with a buy-in fee of more than $10,000. The 2006 WSOP will feature a $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. poker tournament. H.O.R.S.E. is considered by many top players to be the truest test of poker skill, with five unique disciplines being played at the felt. This brings the event total at the 37th annual incarnation of the World Series of Poker to 45.
As the acronym hints, H.O.R.S.E. is comprised of Texas Hold 'em, Omaha/8 (or better), Razz, Seven-Card Stud, and Seven-Card Stud high-low (the "E" stands for 8 or better in the high-low Seven-Card Stud game), which are played in alternating order. All games in H.O.R.S.E. are played at fixed limits, with the blinds/limits rising and the game type changing according to a preset time schedule.
By staging the $50K event, Harrah's seems to be listening to the sentiments of many poker players who feel that success in one poker discipline is not enough to qualify a player as the overall champion of poker. The popularity of no-limit Texas Hold 'em has drawn increasing hordes of players to the WSOP over the last few years, culminating in the 5,600+ person Main Event won by Joe Hachem last year. Poker purists, however, claim that the Main Event, while obviously challenging and requiring intense stamina and mental fortitude, is simply inadequate when it comes to minimizing the element of luck and weeding out less skillful play.
A date for the H.O.R.S.E. event has not yet been set, but you can be sure that poker's best will be there at the Rio in Las Vegas to jockey for position and ride their hands to victory.
