Over 400 poker hopefuls have converged on the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, for the prestigious Aussie Millions poker tournament. The No-Limit Texas Hold 'em event costs A$10,000 (~ $7,500 US) to enter and promises a record prize pool of A$4,180,000 (~ $3.15 million US), almost a quarter of which will go to the winner.
With some of the biggest names in poker, such as Phil Ivey, John Juanda, David Williams, Marcel Luske, Antonio Esfandiari, Kathy Leibert, and Scott Fischman, flying down south for the winter to compete in the Aussie Millions, it appears as though the player to beat this year is 2005 WSOP champ Joe Hachem. As the Lebanese-born Hachem makes his home in Australia, many players are hoping to be the one to bust out last year's World Series winner on his home turf.
Hachem, for his part, has tried to stay relaxed and cool, opting to take part in a family barbecue prior to taking his seat at the felt, and bringing to the tournament an iPod full of 50 Cent tunes to chill out with. So far, two days into the five-day event, it appears as though his strategies have paid off, with Hachem sitting on top of an above average chip stack as of press time. While that may not seem too impressive, just surviving seems to be a miraculous feat in this player field, which has already lost world-class poker pros like Daniel Negreanu, Mike Sexton, and Joe Lissandro. With about half of the total 418 players already eliminated, Barry Greenstein is the current chip leader.
