Monte Carlo Millions winner Phil Ivey has been recognized by Bluff Magazine and ESPN as the 2005 poker player of the year. The prestigious honor, bestowed by the world's most widely distributed poker publication and the worldwide leader in sports, was received with humility by Ivey, who still considers himself to be "a regular guy." Regular? Hardly.
With $3.4 million in tournament winnings alone, owing in part to major successes at World Series of Poker events, including a win at the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament in 2000, Ivey "has emerged as one of the best players of this generation," according to Eddy Kleid, Co-President of Bluff Magazine. The Poker Player of the Year honor follows hot on the heels of Ivey's being named to Black Enterprise magazine's Hot List of America's Most Powerful Players Under 40.
When not playing in major poker tournaments, Ivey can usually be found racking and stacking his chips in the "Big Game," a $4,000/$8,000 cash game at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, where he now resides. Though the cash game doesn't allow Ivey to accrue the valuable points by which Bluff Magazine and ESPN determine the Player of the Year, he has been known to supplement his tournament poker income quite well from it. Not bad for a "regular guy."
