With 411 players having been ousted from the Australian Poker Championships over four grueling days of competition, seven of poker's finest players sat down at the final table to determine a winner. With two local Aussies, a Canadian, a Kiwi, and two Americans grinding it out at the felt, the final table had an international flavor to it. In the end, New Zealand's Lee Nelson emerged victorious to become the Australian poker champion.
With big-name pros like Phil Ivey, Joe Hachem, Michael Gracz, and Kenna James long gone from the prestigious poker tournament, Nelson and the six other Aussie Millions main event finalists were aiming to make a name for themselves with their first big tournament showing. When the action became heads up, Nelson held a 3:1 chip lead over 21-year-old American college student Robert Neary. Despite putting up a decent fight, Neary simply couldn't overcome Nelson's large lead, losing to a jack-high flush on the final hand. Neary takes home over half a million dollars* for his efforts, while Nelson will deposit a check for almost a million* into his bank account.
