John Van Sloten is known around Calgary, Alberta, for giving over sermons that tie pop culture and religion together. The pastor of New Hope Christian Reformed Church doesn't get hot under the collar when it comes to preaching about mainstream culture and how it can be channeled towards better service of the Lord. The latest hot trend Van Sloten has set his sights on is poker.
Realizing that Texas Hold 'em poker is the hottest thing since the burning bush, Van Sloten chose to preach to his congregants about the virtues of the card game. A recreational poker player himself, Van Sloten sent out a message about how the adrenaline rush that comes with playing the highly-energized game could be directed towards one's faith. The poker-friendly pastor claims that God appreciates nothing as much than having his creations feel abuzz about religious service and ritual.
In addition to promoting the positive aspects of poker play, Van Sloten also warned of the negatives. Not wishing for a congregation of poker addicts, Van Sloten exhorted his audience to play poker in moderation and only for recreational purposes. Noting that the Bible doesn't have strong objections to gambling, Van Sloten made it clear that, in general, he felt poker playing wasn't a problem, but rather an opportunity to stir up positive energies and emotions for loftier goals. We hope to God he's right!
