Talk about being dealt a lucky hand! After Northern Ireland's police stormed a private poker club in Belfast, confiscating over £23,000, a Magistrate Court has ordered the money returned to the poker players. Approximately 80 poker players at the Cavendish Club in the Northern Irish capital city were instructed by police to stop playing. Police carried out the five-hour raid under the Betting, Gaming, Lotteries, and Amusements Order 1985, but the court system came to the poker players' rescue, as the seized monies were ordered returned.
Though happy about the court ruling, the poker club's owner, Sean Murphy, isn't fully satisfied. Citing surprise and anger at how forceful police were with the poker players during the raid, Murphy is lodging a complaint with the local Police Ombudsman. The legal status of such poker clubs in Northern Ireland is currently unclear. Murphy maintains that the club had always had a clean profile and had always been run in accordance with the law, so the poker players weren't deserving of such heavy-handed treatment.
