North Dakota state representative Jim Kasper is an ardent proponent of bringing online poker to his state. Being illegal under U.S. law, all online poker rooms are currently based offshore, despite the fact that most of the poker player pool resides in North America. Kasper has been spearheading a movement to make online poker legally based in North Dakota, championing the idea that the tax revenues gained would benefit state programs immensely. Although Kasper had succeeded in getting a bill passed by the state house of representatives, it failed in the senate last year.
Citing exasperation, Kasper has just released a statement in which he said he'd likely abandon his fight to make online poker legal. In particular, Kasper has found it extremely difficult to raise funds from any of the major players in the online poker industry. With so many parties having a potential interest in expanding the billion-dollar online poker industry, it is somewhat ironic that fundraising has proven to be the weak point of Kasper's legalization campaign. Thus, unless a major online poker provider steps up to bat for Kasper, it looks as though extra tax dollars will continue to float away over international waters.
