Tennis has the Davis Cup. Soccer has the World Cup. Golf has the Ryder Cup. Now, poker has a truly international team competition of its own, with the Poker Nations Cup. The poker tournaments, slated to take place from February 16th-19th in Cardiff, Wales, will feature some of the world's greatest poker-playing nations: Sweden, England, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, and, of course, the United States.
Competing for $100,000 in the winner-take-all international poker event, each team will consist of six players who will earn points for their countries based on their finishes in one of six sit-and-go poker tournaments. The number of points each country's players earn will determine the country's relative chip size at the final table, to be played after all six sit-and-gos are concluded. Unique to this poker tournament, the final table will allow for a "tag-team" format, whereby team captains can substitute any one of three pre-selected players from their team to sit and play at any given time.
The Poker Nations Cup will also feature an individual component that has team members putting up $2,000 apiece while competing in their sit-and-go tournament, the winner of which gets his or her money back, in addition to the $10,000 put up by the five other players at the table. Each participant will have all his or her other expenses paid for by the tournament organizers.
Some notable players who have committed themselves to representing their countries in the Poker Nations Cup are David "Devilfish'' Ulliott, Robert Williamson, Julian Gardner, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Hendon "Mobster" Ram Vaswani, Jan Sorenson, and Noel Furlong. The event's sponsor, 888.com's online poker room Pacific Poker, has reserved one spot on each team for an online qualifier from each country. These six lucky poker players will mix it up with the pros and try to lead their respective countries to victory in just about one week.
