The incomprehensible success of poker over the last few years, with its ubiquitousness on television, the skyrocketing sales of poker chips, poker tables, and other poker paraphernalia, as well as the widespread glorification of poker's champions, has truly led the game to go mainstream. The one thing that seemed to be missing to officially crystallize poker's sport status was an umbrella organization, like golf's PGA, to act as an authoritative governing body over all the world's players. The World Federation of Poker (WFP) aims to provide just that.
The non-profit organization has succeeded in recruiting an advisory panel comprised of some of the world's best poker players, such as Annie Duke, Greg Raymer, Robert Williamson III, Clonie Gowan, Marcel "The Flying Dutchman" Luske, Thomas Bihl, and Howard Lederer. These poker icons will help promote the notion of an international governing body of poker with active player participation, and, to that end, aim to garner widespread support for the venture from as many professional players as possible.
One of the main changes to the poker scene the WFP intends to make is the introduction of a World Cup of Poker, a three-day-long international Olympic-style poker competition that will tie together the various categories of poker players - amateurs, seniors, students, and professionals. The WFP expects players from up to 40 countries to participate in online qualifying tournaments for the World Cup. The first World Cup is slated to take place in Las Vegas, with future World Cups taking place in other international venues, like Austria, Taiwan, and Macau.
Additionally, the WFP, with the assistance of world-renown tournament director Matt Savage, will aim to forge one international standard set of rules, from the many different variations found in poker rooms worldwide, which will apply to all sanctioned events. Yearly membership fees range from $50 to $200, depending on which WFP category a player fits into, and include a 15% discount on all poker products in the WFP online store, free online newsletters, complimentary freeroll online poker tournament berths, and monthly updates on one's local, national, and international poker ranking.
With such lofty goals and the wherewithal, organizational abilities, and star support to achieve them, the WFP promises to create a permanent place for poker in popular sports and culture.
