Andy Beal, a self-made billionaire businessman, banker, real-estate developer, and mathematical genius, is also a huge poker aficionado. And when I say huge, I mean he's the blue whale of the world's poker seas, playing cards for enormous sums of money running into the millions of dollars. But who does he play poker with? Who else has that kind of money to play such high-stakes poker save for the best of the best poker pros? Indeed, several star poker players, like Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, and Johnny Chan, have joined forces along with a few other top poker professionals, pooling their resources to challenge Beal heads-up in the richest poker game in the world.
Other known members of the group of poker pros, also known as "The Corporation," are Brunson's son, Todd, Minh Ly, Chau Giang, Jennifer Harman, and Ted Forrest. The poker game of choice is Limit Texas Hold 'em, a somewhat ironic name for a poker match that sees betting of astronomical proportions at the $50,000/$100,000 level. With money like that posted just to begin play in each round, millions of dollars can change hands in the course of just a few short hours, with some pots even topping the $1 million mark.
The game is actually an ongoing private match, rather than a televised poker event, being played whenever Beal and the poker pros agree on a date and time. The locale, formerly the Bellagio, is now the high-stakes room at the posh Wynn hotel and casino in Las Vegas, roped off to preserve the exclusivity of the VIPs. Different members of The Corporation square off against Beal in an agreed-upon rotation. Typically each session lasts from three to five days, though both Beal and Corporation members are free to quit playing whenever they choose.
