Poker is big in California. Being the state that houses the second-most sanctioned poker tables in the entire U.S., many of them in famed card rooms like the Commerce Casino and the Bicycle Club Casino, California is known for having an action-packed poker scene. It is thus hardly surprising that local charities try to tap the pool of California's poker lovers in order to raise money through immensely popular No-Limit Texas Hold 'em tournaments. Unfortunately for them, however, poker fundraisers are illegal according to state law.
While bingo games, raffles, and Chinese auctions are allowed, many a non-profit organization has received stern warnings from the state Attorney General's office not to plan charity poker fundraisers, as they would be in violation of California law. While some charity poker fundraisers still clandestinely go on as planned despite risking punitive sanctions, they may soon no longer have to hide behind closed doors, thanks to a bill currently pending approval in the California state legislature, which stands to potentially legalize charity poker.
If passed, the bill, which has already been approved by the California Assembly and has been transferred to the state Senate for ratification, would place several restrictions on charity poker events. Individual charities would be limited to holding one poker fundraiser per year, while any particular hall would be limited to holding two poker events over the course of a year. In addition, the poker players would have to be aged 21 or over and could only win prizes valued at up to $5,000, as opposed to actual cash prizes.
