This year's L.A. Poker Classic at Commerce Casino brought out some of the best and brightest stars of the silver screen and the green felt. Almost 700 players turned out for the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Texas Hold 'em event at the world's largest poker room, just outside Los Angeles, California. In addition to the typical crop of poker pros, a slew of Hollywood celebrities, like Shannon Elizabeth, Gabe "Mr. Kotter" Kaplan, Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss, Jennifer Tilly, and James Woods, took part in the poker festivities.
Surprisingly, most of the most successful and well-known poker pros were eliminated in the early stages of the competition. Among the notable exits from day one were defending champion Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, John Juanda, Michael Gracz, Daniel Negreanu, and Ted Forrest, while day two saw Men "The Master" Nguyen, Jennifer Harman, Mike "The Mouth" Matusow, Barry Greenstein, Erick Lindgren, and Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari disappear. The action was fast and furious, as within two days, the field was narrowed down to just under 100 participants. Play then slowed significantly as it took another four days for the field to reach the final table of six. James Woods had the strongest showing among celebrities, with a 24th place finish landing him in the money for a payday of about $40K, not that the Hollywood actor needs the extra cash.
After six days of grueling poker play, two unheralded competitors, Alan Goehring and Daniel Quach, were left to battle it out for the top prize. In just under an hour, Goehring sealed the deal as he paired his king, while Quach's A-J offsuit failed to improve after both players went all-in. The two poker players became instant millionaires with Goehring taking the lion's share of the purse, approximately $2.4 million, and Quach taking a "consolation prize" of about $1.2 million. As an added bonus, Goehring also won a free $25K seat to the WPT Championships at the Bellagio in April.
