No, we're not horsing around. Jim Switlyk, in the horse racing business for three years, actually named a one-year-old filly after Annie Duke, arguably
the world's most well-known female poker player. Switlyk, a Jersey man, was inspired to saddle the horse with Duke's name based on the horse's lineage. Coming from a line of horses with names like "Annie's Surprise" and "Cam's Card Shark," "Annie Duke" seemed like a perfect fit for the filly.
An avid fan of poker, Switlyk has prepared a list of "suitable" names for future equine acquisitions. "The Professor" and "Fossilman" have been bandied about as possibilities for Switlyk's studs and stallions, after professional poker players Howard Lederer and Greg Raymer, respectively. Just like her poker-player namesake, Annie Duke, the horse, has performed well in competition so far. Switlyk hopes that his stable full of foals matures into champions, just like the poker greats.
