Former Oscar nominee Jeniffer Tilly abandoned Hollywood for Las Vegas last night when, for the first time in 15 years, she didn't make an appearance at the Academy Awards or post-Oscar events. Instead, Tilly could be found at Caesars Palace at NBC's Heads-Up Poker Championship. Her absence at the Oscars marks the completion of a transformation for Tilly, from acting to poker. The actress, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 1994 for her supporting role in "Bullets Over Broadway," also won the 2005 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Ladies Event, giving her instantly making her a poker star.
With 63 other competitors battling it out in NBC's Heads-Up Poker Championship, Tilly found herself facing poker pro Paul Phillips in the first round. Possibly to gain some sort of psychological advantage over Tilly, or maybe just to get some camera time on NBC, Phillips donned a hooded sweatshirt and assumed the persona of Tilly's poker-playing boyfriend, Phil "The Unabomber" Laak, complete with shadow boxing moves and push-ups. Whether it was his antics or simply superior poker play, Phillips ousted Tilly and moved on to the round of 32. Tilly will have to wait until next year for another shot at Heads-Up poker glory and the $500,000 top prize.
