Yesterday, young Canadian poker player James Lopushinsky hit the jackpot at the first Canadian Open Poker Championship. The 23-year-old champion collected as much as C$250,000 after besting Karim Chatur, who hails from Calgary, in the final of the heads-up tournament, which took place at the Stampede Casino. Chatur, who finished second, received C$125,000 for his efforts.
Another participant in the championship was Brad Booth, a local poker celebrity. Surprisingly enough, it was Booth who took Lopushinsky under his wing and taught the fortunate championship winner the intricacies of the game. Booth first hired Lopushinsky as a dealer at his gaming facility. Lopushinsky, who has only been playing poker for a relatively short period of time, was reported as saying that he could not believe his luck.
